St. Sancar themed birthday party

Science-themed birthday events continue at the Kocaeli Science Center, affiliated with the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Department of Culture and Tourism.

Each month, the event focuses on a scientist, and the chosen scientist for September is Nobel Prize-winning molecular biologist Aziz Sancar, born on September 8th. The event began with a documentary about Aziz Sancar and continued with information and workshops on biology and chemistry. The event, which included fun games, a cake-cutting ceremony, and a science show, provided a truly enjoyable experience for children, while families expressed their satisfaction with the event. The monthly event, organized by the science center, continues to attract attention from the people of Kocaeli and visitors from out of town.

He won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

September's Scientist of the Month was Prof. Aziz Sancar, born on September 8th. He is a Turkish academic, biochemist, molecular biologist, and winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Sancar is known for his pioneering work on biochemical approaches used in identifying many components of DNA repair over the past 20 years. Along with Mehmet Özdoğan, he is the first Turkish American to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Prof. Sancar won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research mapping how cells repair damaged DNA and preserve genetic information. The terms "maxicell," the technique Aziz Sancar developed and named, and "excinuclease/excision nuclease," the enzyme he discovered and named, have been included in the Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
